It's easy to feel discouraged about the climate crisis, but the City of Hamilton is taking strong action to create a greener, fairer, and more efficient future.  Over the next few weeks, we'll outline their plans.

Week 1:   Hamilton's Achievements in 2024

  • 55,482 trees planted - 11% above the annual goal.
  • 13.6 km of new bike lanes added, now totalling 590 km of the planned 970 km network.
  • Transit ridership up 14.5% from 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic levels; diesel buses to be phased out by 2026.
  • Heat Relief:  2,000 bus tickets to cooling centres, 830 "cool kits", and140 air conditioner subsidies.
  • Study shows waste heat from localindustries could power 140 MWh annually via a planned "Thermal Corrider".
  • New Horizon Development cut emissions by 60% at a rental project using geothermal and efficient ventilation.
