The Bishop of Niagara, The Right Rev. Dr. Susan Bell, invites clergy and licensed lay workers of the diocese to gather for a service of Eucharist, including blessing of oils and the renewal of ordination and baptismal vows. Clergy are invited to wear clericals and sit in congregation.
Clergy: Please remember to bring your own oil stocks or containers; oil for both chrism and unction will be available.
"The Renewal of Vows and Blessing of Oils service has roots dating back to 200 AD and was a part of the liturgical reforms of the 1960s and 1970s. At one time the custom was to hold the service on Maundy Thursday, but for practical reasons in more recent times, the service now usually occurs earlier in Holy Week."
