Ash Wednesday marks the start of the 40-day Lenten season–a time in which we are called to prayer, fasting, and repentance before celebrating Easter. During the Ash Wednesday service, the priest makes the sign of the cross with ashes on a congregant's forehead. The ashes are made by burning palm branches from the previous year's Palm Sunday.
