A Stunning Addition To Bishopsgate

If you've visited Bishopsgate (the Cathedral's forecourt on James St N) recently, you will surely have noticed a new addition to our beautiful gardens. Last Friday we were thrilled to welcome Tim Schmalz's life-sized sculpture Be Welcoming as a powerful and permanent reminder that each one of us has the vocation and capacity to be an angel for others on our journey through life. Be Welcoming was created in 2019, inspired by a verse from Chapter 13 of the Letter to the Hebrews: “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.” Tim Schmalz's work is known and installed worldwide, including at the Vatican in Rome.  You may have seen another of his pieces, Homeless Jesus, outside St. Patrick's Church at the corner of King and Victoria in downtown Hamilton.  More information about Tim Schmalz and his work is available on his website at  https://www.sculpturebytps.com/. The Cathedral was able to acquire this sculpture through the generosity of Vera Tomlinson, aunt of parishioner Barbara Jepson, who endowed a fund for the maintenance of Bishopsgate as part of her estate planning. A service of blessing and dedication is being planned. Watch this space for more details.

Sunday, September 29, 11:45am

Last Chance to add your name today to the Parish Lunch sign up sheet at the back of the church, or email
cathedral.admin@niagaraanglican.ca to join us for lunch (straight after the 10:30am Sunday service) to celebrate the Priesting of Revd Monica!

Ordination Service   Sunday, September 29, 4:00pm
Your prayers are invited for Mike Degan, Monica Green, Sarah Grondin, David Montgomery, and Russell Wardell as they prepare for ordination to the priesthood.
The service will take place at Christ's Church Cathedral on Sunday, September 29, at 4:00pm. Bishop Susan Bell will be the ordaining bishop and celebrant, and the Reverend Victor Kischak will be the preacher.
All are welcome to attend this exciting event in the life of our diocese, either in-person or virtually via the diocesan YouTube channel! Clergy are particularly encouraged to attend in-person and vest as a sign of support; the liturgical colour is red.
We also ask for your personal prayers for the ordinands and that in the coming weeks, they be remembered at worship  services throughout the diocese.

SEPTEMBER 2024 SUPERCRAWL!

Thank you, thank you, thank you !

Super Crawl 2024 was the most successful ever in many ways. 7,204 visitors came through our doors to hear live music, to view 3 Art displays, (one the results of work done by our own Cathedral Cafe guests and another focusing on ‘Humanizing the Homeless’),and to experience the glory, the art and the history of the building. Our visitors gave $1368.00 in cash and electronic donations. More importantly, 55 of them volunteered themselves for work ranging from the Cafe to the brass monkeys and the gardens of Bishopsgate. Most important, 494 of them asked for our prayers for other, specific people (that is 1 person in every 15). All seemed to walk around with smiles on their faces and expressed both gratitude and amazement that we would open our doors as well as our hearts to them.
None of this would be possible without a host of volunteers; 32 guides and greeters, and 18 musicians or singers, and 6 members of the cathedral staff who went way beyond their usual working hours. Of the 50 volunteers and musicians, no fewer than 44 were members of the cathedral parish, a quite extraordinary contribution from a congregation of this size. To all who contributed in any way, large or small “Well done thou good and faithful servants”.

Drawing Closer

Our new next-steps-in-faith class for adults, Drawing Closer, will begin on Wed Sept 18 from 7:00 to 8:30pm at the Cathedral. Folks from other parishes have already expressed interest in joining this exciting initiative.
If you are planning to attend, please ensure that you let Monica knows that you are coming!

Volunteer Cooks and Assistants Needed

Helping those in need over Christmastide.

Wonderful Volunteers are needed to help out on Christmas Day for our Christmas Dinner,  an  opportunity to help those that desperately need food, kindness, and support during what would be a lonely, helpless time. The volume of guest this year will require us to have two meal sittings, and this will require an increase in the number of helpers required.  If you can help us to cook or serve on Christmas Day, please contact Richard Cunningham at countertenor.rc@gmail.com for more details.

If you are unable to help on the day contact Richard to see if you can assist with monetary gifts or other appropriate gift items. More details coming soon.

How about assisting by cooking meals to fill our freezer!

Pre-cooked meals are desperately needed to be given to parishioners in need over the cold Winter months. Do you know of anyone coming out of hospital that may need these meals or a family member going through trying circumstances? We would like to have a crew of four or five people to cook a large selection of meals which can be frozen and put aside for these kinds of situations.  Cooks required on Wednesday evenings from 4pm until around 8pm. Please contact Richard Cunningham at countertenor.rc@gmail.com for further details.
He will be delighted to hear from you!

Simple Monthly Actions from Climate Justice Cathedral

Simple Monthly Actions from Climate Justice Cathedral

This month as part of the Global Season of Creation, CJC joins with Christians around the world praying, educating, advocating, and acting against climate breakdown. Because Climate breakdown increasingly leads to more refugees and internally displaced persons this week
Climate Justice Cathedral is asking for your financial support for the Cathedral Crusaders Sept. 28th walk. Please continue to pray this prayer every day and watch for a further action next week:

Creator God , We praise you for making our common home - the Earth. Our selfishness, greed, neglect, and abuse have caused the climate crisis, loss of biodiversity, human suffering, and the suffering of all our fellow creatures.
We confess that we have failed to listen to the groans of the Earth, and the Spirit of hope and justice that lives within us.
Work with and through us in weakness, to heal and restore your beloved Creation.
In the name of Jesus Christ,  Amen.
