Speak Out

Speak Out

Climate Justice Cathedral

Write and call the Premier and your MPP!

There is much concern about the Ontario Government’s proposed legislation of Bills 5 and 17, and rightly so. For example,

  • Bill 5, also known as the “Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act”, has environmental critics, Indigenous groups, and municipalities worried.  For example, Bill 5 proposes special economic zones where the Premier and Cabinet could avoid environmental assessments, and proceed with more urban sprawl on farmland and other destructive projects such as superhighway 413.
  • Bill 17, the “Protect Ontario by Building Faster and Smarter Act”, seeks to make building new homes easier - but affordability will remain an issue.  In Canada, affordable housing refers to living spaces that are financially accessible to people with a median household income ($68,400).  Bill 17 will not solve homelessness, and do little to offset the desperate need for affordable housing.

To better understand Bill 5 and the reaction from a number of critics, please visit CBC's news item Doug Ford's controversial Bill 5: Here's what you need to know , by Mike Crawley* and posted on May 28, 2025.

Silence is acquiescence!

Write and call the Premier and your MPP and tell them you oppose Bill 5 and Bill 17.  Remind them that they were elected to act in our best interests, protect the less fortunate and the environment, and support a just future.

Alongside Hope

Alongside Hope

From Gardener to Entrepreneur

Seluwa Said and her family faced extreme hardship in Tanzania’s Nyarugusu Refugee Camp – until joining the Sustainable Vegetable Farming Project run by Alongside Hope partner Church World Service...Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Seluwa and her family were forced to flee to a refugee camp in Tanzania in 2018. They were surviving on one meal a day, with no money for soap, clothes, or school supplies.

In 2022...Said joined the Sustainable Vegetable Gardening Project...With newfound knowledge and resources, she was able to grow a bountiful harvest, enough for her family and neighbours, as well as the ability to generate income.  For the full story, please visit the  Alongside Hope News  page.

Donating During a Service

Donating During a Service

There are many options to financially support the Cathedral and some parishioners prefer to place their offering on the collection plate during the service.  For many, the public act of giving is a powerful expression of our gratitude to God.

If you have elected to donate when the collection plate is being passed in church, here are a few helpful tips:

  • We strongly recommend that if your offering is in cash, please use an envelope with your name and address so that you can receive a tax deductible receipt for the year.   The Cathedral provides tax receipts for annual donations totalling a minimum of $20.   Weekly or monthly donations add up and can be a worthwhile tax credit on your income tax return.
  • Please consider using numbered envelopes even if you're donating monthly vs weekly.   Using a dedicated number means that you don't have to write your name and address each time you donate.  The donor is identified by the number assigned to them.  We currently have a surplus supply of numbered envelopes so please do not hesitate to ask for a set by contacting our Donations Administrator.
  • Alternatively, we recommend donating by cheque vs cash.  Cash on the offering plate cannot be donor-identified.  A cheque with your name and address provides a paper trail, allowing us to get that tax receipt to you.

We invite you to discuss any questions or concerns with our Donations Administrator.

Please join us. Fridays 12:15 -12:30 pm

As a member of the Community of the Cross of Nails, we gather weekly at noon on Fridays to pray for peace, justice, and reconciliation.   We start our prayer with:

We stand together at this Friday noon hour to join with all those churches, schools, and other institutions who have committed themselves to the Community of the Cross of Nails. We search for reconciliation between ourselves and all those who have been harmed by war, by violence, by the effects of colonization and abuses of power, and by greed, selfishness, thoughtlessness and indifference.
